Fathers' rights are important

9878745_S.jpgWhen it comes to family, your children are perhaps the most important. You teach them everything from walking and talking to riding a bike. For many, it is extremely rewarding and fulfilling to raise a child.

Not everyone gets a chance to raise his or her own child, however. You need custody to do so. Before that process can begin for fathers, they need to establish paternity. This can be cumbersome if you are not married to the mother of your child. Even then, establishing paternity in Illinois does not necessarily give a father the right to custody or even visitation.

Gaining custody requires more than a name on the child's birth certificate. This reality is frustrating for many fathers looking to raise their children beyond providing financial assistance like child support. You want to be a part of your child's life, but you must jump through many legal hoops. But, if the mother of your child disapproves of you gaining custody, the battle becomes even harder.

Of course, in all of this, the best interests of your child are always the most important. You want them to be financially stable, have a loving and supporting family and have a chance to thrive and grow into a successful adult. Living in a stressful or tumultuous environment puts your child at a disadvantage, so you want to make sure that everything you are doing is for your child and in their best interests.

If you are a father hoping to seek custody or visitation rights for your child, you are certainly entitled to many fathers' rights. Consulting a lawyer about these rights may give you and your child the edge necessary to have a meaningful relationship.
